I'M VERY EXCITED TO WELCOME, MATTHEW NOEL.

MANY OF YOU MAY RECOGNIZE MATTHEW, FROM PREVIOUS RECOGNITIONS, FOR HIS INCREDIBLE SPELLING SKILLS.

MATTHEW, JUST RECENTLY COMPETED IN THE 2021 SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE AND OUT OF MORE THAN 11 MILLION STUDENTS ACROSS THE NATION, HE WAS ONE OF 209 STUDENTS TO MAKE IT TO THE NATIONAL LEVEL.

THAT'S A PRETTY BIG DEAL.

THAT WAS HIS THIRD APPEARANCE AT THE NATIONAL SPELLING BEE WITH HIS FIRST IN 2018.

HE AGAIN WAS AT THE SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE IN 2019.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE COMPETITION WAS CANCELED LAST YEAR, AND WITH THE BEE RETURNING AGAIN THIS YEAR, IT WAS NO SURPRISE THAT HE LANDED A SPOT AT THE 2021 NATIONAL COMPETITION.

DURING THIS TIME AT [INAUDIBLE] ELEMENTARY AND FRIENDSHIP MIDDLE SCHOOL, MATTHEW HAS REPRESENTED FRIENDSHIP ISD AS, A FIVE TIME DISTRICT SPELLING BEE, CHAMP.

NO ONE'S EVER DONE THAT BEFORE.

HE'S ALSO PLACED FIRST AT THREE REGIONAL SPELLING BEES.

SO HIS FIRST REGIONAL APPEARANCE, HE GOT SECOND.

HE'S PLACED FIRST IN THREE AND THEN LAST YEAR WAS CANCELED.

WE PROBABLY, WOULD HAVE SEEN IN PLACE FIRST AGAIN.

DURING THIS YEAR, SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE, THEY DID THROW IN AN UNEXPECTED TWIST JUST TWO MONTHS AWAY FROM THE COMPETITION, BUT EVEN WITH THEM ADDING IN A VOCABULARY ELEMENT, MATTHEW STILL FOUGHT HARD AND MADE IT TO THE SECOND ROUND.

AS AN EIGHTH GRADER MOVING ONTO THE NINTH GRADE CENTER, THIS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, THIS WAS MATTHEW'S LAST TIME TO COMPETE IN THE DISTRICT, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL SPELLING BEES.

BUT WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF MATTHEW'S HARD WORK, FOR REPRESENTING FRIENDSHIP ISD AMONGST SCHOOLS ACROSS THE NATION.

REFLECTIONS CONTEST HAS BEEN STAPLE ARTS PROGRAM IN MANY SCHOOLS FOR OVER 50 YEARS.

THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF OUR LOCAL PTA, MILLIONS OF STUDENTS HAVE FOUND A CREATIVE OUTLET IN THE AREAS OF DANCE, CHOREOGRAPHY, FILM PRODUCTION, LITERATURE, MUSIC COMPOSITION, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND VISUAL ARTS.

THIS YEAR'S THEME WAS, "I MATTER BECAUSE... " AND TONIGHT TO HELP US WITH THE RECOGNITIONS, WE HAVE REGINA FRANKLIN. [INAUDIBLE].

IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THAT HONOR, THE SENIOR ATHLETES HAVE TO BE OF GOOD MORAL CHARACTER AND HAVE A GPA OF A 94 OR HIGHER.

TONIGHT WE'RE ALSO HONORING TWO FRENSHIP HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL PLAYERS FOR THEIR ALL-STATE RECOGNITIONS.

ONE OF THOSE ATHLETES WAS SELECTED TO PLAY IN THE ALL-STAR GAME IN ARLINGTON.

SYDNEY WAS AN OUTFIELDER, OUR GREAT OUTFIELDER.

SYDNEY IS FASTER THAN FAST.

SHE DOES A TREMENDOUS JOB, YOU JUST DON'T COACH SPEED AND I'VE GOT A TEAM FULL OF RABBITS AS WELL. WE CAN ALL RUN.

BUT SYDNEY ALSO DID REALLY WELL IN THE ALL-STAR GAME.

I WAS TOLD HER TEAM GOT BEAT ON A WALK-OFF IN THE NIGHT.

I WAS TOLD HAD HER TEAM WON, SHE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN MVP.

SHE HAD A TREMENDOUS GAME.

THE PLAYER THAT SHE HIT OFF PLAYED THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FROM CONVERSE, JERSEY.

SO SHE DID QUITE WELL.

ACTUALLY AARON WAS AN ULTIMATE.

SHE CAME CLOSE TO MAKING IT.

AARON HAD THIS COMMITTED TO PLAY, AFTER SHE GETS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL.

I HAD THREE SENIORS THAT QUALIFIED.

I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT THE 94 FOUR-YEAR AVERAGE WAS THE LOW MARKET, AT LEAST MAKE THAT.

OUR THREE SENIORS WERE WELL ABOVE THAT.

THEY DID TREMENDOUSLY WELL IN THE CLASSROOM HONESTLY.

I'VE BEEN BLESSED THROUGH THE YEARS.

HERE, UNLIKE OTHER PLACES I'VE COACHED, I'VE NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT PLAYERS BEEN ELIGIBLE.

THEY ALL HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM, WHICH THAT TRANSLATES TO BEING GOOD SOFTBALL PLAYERS.

WHEN YOU HAVE SMART KIDS THAT'S A LOT EASIER TO COACH THEM AND BE SUCCESSFUL.

BUT CLAUDIA CARS IS NOT HERE.

I WAS TOLD SHE'S ON THE BEACH, BUT SHE'S OUT OF TOWN.

CLAUDIA IS GOING TO BE GOING TO ACU.

I'VE HAD HER SISTER UP THERE BEFORE.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S NOT WIDELY KNOWN IS THAT SHE ALSO SUPERVISES AND LEADS EIGHT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS.

AS THE JOB GETS BIGGER, I GUESS WE'RE PUSHING ABOUT 1300 EMPLOYEES AT THIS POINT, AND ALL THE WORK THAT GOES WITH THAT AND THEN BEING ABLE TO ATTEND TO THOSE PRINCIPALS AS NEEDED AND BE WITH THEM AS SHE NEEDS TO BE IN A GROWING DISTRICT.

BUT IF YOU LOOK AT PEER-REVIEWED EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH, THE USE OF RETENTION IS NOT A USEFUL TOOL IN HELPING KIDS ULTIMATELY GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL.

IF YOU SEE A CHILD RETAINED IN ELEMENTARY, YOU MIGHT SEE THEM MAKE A FEW GAINS FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THOSE FEW YEARS IS THOSE GAINS ARE LOST.

SO THEN WHAT HAPPENS BY THE TIME FAST FORWARD TO YOU GET TO HIGH SCHOOL AND YOU'RE 17, AND YOU'RE A SOPHOMORE OR YOU'RE A JUNIOR, THEY WILL ABSOLUTELY QUIT SCHOOL.

THEY WILL QUIT SCHOOL, SO WHAT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD IDEA, WHEN I'M SIX OR SEVEN YEARS OLD, AND THEN SOMETIMES THEY MIGHT BE RETAINED AGAIN.

I KNOW THAT EVERY PARENT WANTS THE BEST FOR THEIR CHILD AND THEY'RE TRYING TO DO WHAT THEY THINK IS RIGHT, BUT THIS IDEA OF LET'S JUST ALLOW THEM TO RETAIN, I THINK IT'S BASED ON A LOT OF MISSED CONCEPTS THROUGH COVID LEARNING LOSS.

ONCE AGAIN THEIR HEARTS ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE, BUT IT'S ALMOST LIKE IT FEELS THEY'RE PROMOTING RETENTION AS A TOOL TO CLOSE THE GAPS, AND IT JUST DOES NOT LINE UP WITH WHAT RESEARCH HAS TOLD US FOR YEARS ABOUT WHAT RETENTION DOES AND DOESN'T DO, SO THAT'S A CONCERN.

ALL OF OUR STAFF, OUR PRINCIPALS KNOW THAT, SO ULTIMATELY THE PARENT GETS TO DECIDE.

PARTICULARLY, I CAN TELL YOU OF ONE INSTANCE THAT WE HAD OF A PARENT WHO WAS WANTING TO RETAIN THEIR CHILD IN THE NINTH GRADE, WHICH CAME RETAINED IN THE NINTH GRADE, IT'S JUST REPEATING CREDITS.
