WE HAVE [INAUDIBLE] REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.

WE HAVE MS. STEPHANIE LEAHMORE AND [INAUDIBLE].

>> MY NAME IS STEPHANIE LEAHMORE AND THIS [INAUDIBLE] AND WE ARE VERY NERVOUS, OBVIOUSLY.

[NOISE] WE ARE THERE IN YOUR HONOR TONIGHT SAYS REPRESENT THE CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION TEAM AND TALK ABOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

THE FIRST THING THAT WE WANTED TO VISIT ABOUT WAS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES.

THIS SUMMER, IN JUNE OF 2021, WE HAD A VERY LARGE GROUP OF TEACHERS THAT WERE TRAINED ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND WE WERE ABLE TO DO THAT VIRTUALLY THROUGH SOLUTION TREE.

IN THE PAST, WE WERE ABLE TO GO AND HAVE THAT TRAINING OCCUR, THAT WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE A LIVE STREAM AND WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE BIG NUMBER FROM EACH OF THE CAMPUSES THAT WERE ABLE TO ATTEND.

OF ALL 14 CAMPUSES WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE.

WE EVEN WEREN'T ABLE TO BE PAIRED WITH A CONSULTANT FROM SOLUTION TREE TO HELP US CREATE CAMPUS PLANS.

I'M ON THE VERY LAST DAY, ALL OF OUR TEAMS CAME TOGETHER.

WE WROTE ACTION PLANS FOR HOW WE WERE GOING TO BETTER SERVE OUR STUDENTS THROUGH PLC WORK AND WE ARE PLANNING TO DO A SIMILAR CONFERENCE AGAIN THIS NEXT JUNE.

THE NEXT AREA OF FOCUS THAT WE HAVE IS MATH, AND THAT'S NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART, BEING THE MATH COORDINATOR.

THE STATE AND OUR DISTRICT, WE'VE ALL NOTICED THAT MATH HAS BEEN IMPACTED BY COVID-19 MORE THAN OTHER SUBJECT AREAS, AND SO WE'VE RESPONDED TO THAT PROACTIVELY.

WE PROVIDE TRAINING FOR

TEACHERS EVERY YEAR AND WE HELP TEACHERS WHO ARE NEW IN THE CONTENT AREA, NEW TO THE GRADE LEVEL, WE HELP THEM GET STARTED.

WE PROVIDE TRAINING, BUT WE'VE ALSO ADDED SOME EXTRA LAYERS OF SUPPORT THIS YEAR.

ONE OF THOSE, WE'VE PULLED SECOND GRADE, SIXTH GRADE, AND ALGEBRA 1 AS A FOCUS THIS YEAR, WE'RE WORKING ON NUMERACY, WORKING ON HELPING KIDS BECOME MORE FLUENT IN MATHEMATICS.

THEN WE'VE ALSO STARTED OPTIONAL TRAININGS FOR TEACHERS WHO NEED EXTRA SUPPORT.

[NOISE].

>> AT THE END OF LAST YEAR, WE HAD PRE-K ADOPTION COME UP AND WE NARROWED DOWN OUR CHOICES THAT WERE GIVEN TO US BY THE STATE DOWN TO THREE.

OUR TEACHERS AND TOOK THAT CONTENT AND WENT INTO THE CLASSROOM AND SPENT ONE WEEK TEACHING FROM EACH OF THE ADOPTION CHOICES.

THE FRIENDSHIP TEAM ENDED UP CHOOSING FROCK STREET.

EACH SIX WEEKS THE PRE-K TEAM HAS BEEN COMING TOGETHER TO PLAN AND IMPLEMENT AND JUST GO THROUGH CONTENT, LOOKING AT GUIDELINES IN PLENTY.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY'VE ALSO DONE IS WE'VE IMPLEMENTED ARTIFACTS, AND SO WHEN THEY GO BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM, THEY BRING AN ARTIFACT BACK EACH PLANNING SESSION AND TO SHARE WHAT THEY'RE DOING IN THE CLASSROOM AND WHAT THE KIDS ARE LEARNING.

THAT'S BEEN A REALLY POSITIVE THING, I THINK.

I THINK THEY'RE REALLY ENJOYING THAT.

THE TIME SPENT DEVELOPING AND THE COMPETENCY WITH THE NEW MATERIALS ENSURES THAT ALL STUDENTS RECEIVE A SIMILAR PRE-K EXPERIENCE AT EVERY CAMPUS AT FRENSHIP ISD.

THEN THE NEXT LITTLE PIECE IS THE TEXAS READING ACADEMY, WHICH IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART.

LAST YEAR, WE HAD KINDERGARTEN THAT JUMPED INTO THE TEXAS READING ACADEMY, WHICH IS MANDATED BY THE STATE THROUGH HOUSE BILL 3, AND KINDERGARTEN JUMPED IN.

WE HAD ABOUT 35 TEACHERS THAT WENT THROUGH AN 11-MONTH, 60-HOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WHILE STILL TEACHING KIDS.

THEY'VE KNOCKED OFF THE SOCKS OFF AT IT. I HAVE TO TELL YOU.

THIS YEAR WE HAVE FIRST GRADE, SECOND GRADE AND INTERVENTION, ROUGHLY 90 TEACHERS THAT ARE IN THE MIDST OF THIS.

DURING THIS TIME, THEY WILL HAVE TO SUBMIT TWO ARTIFACTS TO THE STATE.

ONE OF THEM IS A VIDEO DEMONSTRATING PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS.

THE SECOND ONE WILL BE, THEY WILL GET A PIECE OF STUDENT WORK AND THEY WILL HAVE TO ANALYZE THAT STUDENT WORK, LOOKING FOR EXPLICIT AND SYSTEMATIC INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES THAT WOULD BEST MEET THE NEED OF THOSE STUDENTS AND THEY SUBMIT THAT TO THE STATE AND IT'S GRADED.

WITH THAT, THEY HAVE TO SCORE AN 80 PERCENT OR ABOVE IN ORDER TO GET THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF GOING THROUGH THE TEXAS READING ACADEMY.

SO THAT'S WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW.

EVERYBODY HAS THEIR VIDEO ARTIFACTS SUBMITTED AND WE'RE JUST WAITING FOR A GRADIENT FROM OUR COHORTS ACROSS THE STATE NOW.

>> THE LAST AREA THAT WE WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT ARE INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES.

OUR INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES ARE VITAL TO OUR CAMPUSES.

WE HAVE EIGHT INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES THAT SERVE OUR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND OUR NIGHT GRADE CENTER, AND THEY PROVIDE SO MUCH SUPPORT TO OUR TEACHERS.

THEY BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH TEACHERS, THEY SUPPORT OUR DISTRICT INITIATIVES, THEY HELP WITH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

THEY WORK WITH TEACHERS ON DISAGGREGATING DATA, LOOKING TO SEE HOW WE CAN HELP KIDS BE MORE SUCCESSFUL, AND THEY HELP WITH NEW INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES.

IT'S A GREAT WAY FOR TEACHERS TO BE ABLE TO TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF A RISK WHEN YOU'VE GOT SOMEONE AND HOLD YOUR HAND ALONGSIDE WITH YOU.

THEY REALLY ARE THE LIAISON BETWEEN THE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT WITH WHAT ARE SUPPORTS THAT WE CAN PROVIDE TEACHERS TO HELP IMPROVE INSTRUCTION.

FIRST OF ALL, NOT ONLY THESE TWO LADIES WERE EXEMPLAR TEACHERS IN THE CLASSROOM.

I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THAT WHEN THEY WERE TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM, THESE WERE THE TEACHERS THAT YOU WOULD ALL WANT YOUR KIDS TO BE.

SECONDLY, TRAINING ADULTS IS A CHALLENGE IN ITSELF.

IT'S DIFFERENT THAN BEING A TEACHER.

THESE TWO LADIES, WHEN THEY CAPTURE TEACHERS' HEARTS, THEY INSPIRE TEACHERS TO BE BETTER AT THEIR PRACTICE, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY RESPOND AND THEY RESPOND QUICKLY.

PERFECT EXAMPLE, MICHELLE ELLIOTT GOT SICK LAST NIGHT, AND THESE TWO LADIES SAID, ''WE'LL DO IT.'' IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THEIR HEARTS.

IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT WHO THEY ARE AS PEOPLE, AND WE'RE JUST BLESSED TO HAVE YOU ALL.

>> THEY SAID WE'RE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND REQUIRE TEACHERS TO DO THIS 60 HOURS OF ADDITIONAL WORK, AND DO ALL THESE THINGS THAT THEY HAD NEVER DONE BEFORE, ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE THEY DID.

SPECIFICALLY TONIGHT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT GOAL NUMBER THREE, IMPLEMENT A TEACHER-TO-TEACHER OBSERVATION PROGRAM TO EXPLORE INNOVATIVE WAYS TO PROVIDE AUTHENTIC LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

LEADERSHIP TEAMS FROM ALL OF OUR 14 CAMPUSES LEARNED ABOUT THE PRACTICES, THE SYSTEMS, THE PROCESSES, WHICH IN TURN ALLOWS OUR TEACHERS TO CREATE THOSE EXPERIENCES FOR KIDS.

THE POWER IN THE PLC PROCESS IS IT FOSTERS AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE TEACHERS ARE ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT BEST INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES, THEY'RE ALLOWED TO GO WATCH EACH OTHER.

THEY'RE ALLOWED TO HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHAT ARE THOSE QUALITY LEARNING AUTHENTIC PRACTICES THAT WE NEED TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE CLASSROOM? THEN JUST TO FOLLOW UP WITH THAT, FROM THE ADMINISTRATIVE PERSPECTIVE, OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, CASSANDRA SLAYTON, SHE PARTNERS WITH OUR CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS AND OUR LEADERSHIP AND THEY DO WALKTHROUGHS TO CALIBRATE WHAT ARE WE SEEING IN CLASSROOMS? THEY'RE ACTUALLY WATCHING STUDENT LEARNING TOGETHER, AND THEY'RE HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS TOGETHER.

GOAL NUMBER FOUR, IMPLEMENTATION OF CHARACTER LESSONS FOR ALL LEVELS OF STAFF AND LEARNERS.

I JUST WANT TO START WITH THE QUOTE THAT'S UP THERE FROM AMY SMALL.

SHE IS OUR LEAD COUNSELOR, PROCESS COUNSELOR.

BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND THE MIDDLE HEALTH CRISIS WE ARE EXPERIENCING, WE ARE EXCITED TO INCORPORATE THESE SUPPORTS FOR OUR STUDENTS.

WE HOPE THAT THESE PROGRAMS WILL SUPPORT AND CREATE A NEW CULTURE OF KINDNESS AND CONNECTION ON CAMPUSES.

THOSE TWO PROGRAMS ARE LISTED ABOVE.

HOPE SQUAD IS THE SECONDARY CURRICULUM, AND IT'S A PEER-NOMINATED SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM.

STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR THE HOPE SQUAD ARE RECOGNIZED JUST AS EXEMPLAR STUDENTS WHO ARE RESPECTFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY, THEIR PEERS SEE THEM THAT WAY.

THE GOAL OF HOPE SQUAD IS TO REDUCE THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH AND JUST TO CHANGE THE CULTURE ON THE CAMPUS TO THAT OF A REALLY SUPPORTIVE PEER-TO-PEER SUPPORT.

THE ELEMENTARY PROGRAM IS SECOND STEP, AND THAT IS KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.

IT IS A CURRICULUM FOR SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

IT IS ACTUALLY FACILITATED BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER, BUT THEY LEARN ABOUT JUST A GROWTH MINDSET, THEY TALK ABOUT BULLYING, RESOLVING CONFLICT, FORMING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, ETC.

WITH BOTH OF THE PROGRAMS, WE ARE IN THE TRAINING PROCESS.

ONE THING THAT WE DO KNOW IS REALLY IMPORTANT IS THAT WE'RE EQUIPPING OUR TEACHERS AND OUR ADMINISTRATORS TO UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT, AND THEN GIVE THEM THE RESOURCES TO DO THAT.

RIGHT NOW, HOPE SQUAD IS ACTUALLY MEETING WITH THEIR SQUADS ON THEIR CAMPUS AND HAVING PARENT MEETINGS, AND THEN STARTING IN JANUARY, WE WILL BEGIN TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH KIDS AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.

NOW, EXCITING 2001 STRATEGIC PLANS THAT WE WENT FROM.

EVERY FIVE YEARS, WE HAVE A STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS.

IN 2016, WE STARTED OUR FIRST ONE, AND I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE IN THE INNER WORKINGS OF THAT PROCESS.

THIS GO AROUND, WE STARTED IN OCTOBER.

WE BEGAN WITH SUMMITS, TWO COMMUNITY SUMMITS, AND THEN WE HAVE HAD FOCUS GROUPS.

THOSE FOCUS GROUPS WERE COMMUNITY MEMBERS, MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND PARENTS.

THEN TOMORROW, WE WILL BEGIN THE DESIGN TEAM.
