WHEN WE STARTED LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS NEW HIGH SCHOOL, THEY REALLY NEEDED TO BE A LOT OF THINGS AND A BUSINESS DEVELOPER, COMPETITIVE PERSON, AN INSTRUCTIONAL LEADER, A PERSON WHO CAN GET KIDS EXCITED AND BRING PEOPLE BEHIND A CAUSE, SO TO SPEAK, WHICH THE CAUSE IS THE NEW SCHOOL.

SHE HAS DONE AN AMAZING JOB OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS AT HERITAGE.

THIS IS A COMPLETELY NEW CHALLENGE.

SHE WAS LIKE, BUT I HAVEN'T DONE THIS BEFORE, AND I SAID, WELL, WE HAVEN'T EITHER [LAUGHTER] SO WE ARE ALL LEARNING TOGETHER.

MAKE NO MISTAKE SHE'S NOT DONE IT BEFORE, BUT DON'T LET HER MAKE YOU THINK THAT SHE IS NOT COURAGEOUS AND FIERCE, AND KIND AS A LEADER.

IT'S NOT THAT YOU JUST APPEAR TO BE NICE, SHE REALLY IS NICE.

TONIGHT WE'RE EXCITED TO CONGRATULATE THE FRENSHIP HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM AND THE COACHES FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON.

NOT ONLY DID THE TEAM MAKE IT INTO THE PLAYOFFS, BUT SEVERAL OF THE ATHLETES RECEIVED MULTIPLE AWARDS AT THE DISTRICT AND STATE LEVELS.

THE SEASON WAS ALSO MARKED BY STUDENTS BREAKING DOZENS OF SCHOOL RECORDS, INCLUDING QUARTERBACK HUDSON HUTCHESON.

HE RANKED THIRD IN THE NATION FOR PASSING YARDS AND RECEIVED THE BILL FORD TOUGH PLAYER OF THE WEEK, AMONG OTHER THINGS, BUT THIS SPECIAL GROUP OF STUDENTS ALSO EXCELLED OFF THE FIELD.

BASED ON THEIR HIGH GPAS AND GOOD MORAL CHARACTER, THESE STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED ACADEMIC ALL STATE HONORS FROM THE TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION, AND TONIGHT WE HAVE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH JAY NORTHCUTT TO HELP US RECOGNIZES STUDENTS. COACH.

I THINK THIS IS PROBABLY THE LARGEST GROUP THAT WE'VE HAD, AT LEAST THAT I'VE GOTTEN TO INTRODUCE.

I'LL ALSO ADD FIVE OF THEM ARE OFFICE LINEMEN.

WHEN YOU'VE GOT A REALLY SMART OFFICE LINE, THAT PAYS OFF.

NOT ONLY HAVE THEY EXCELLED OUT ON THE FIELD, WE ALL KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO JUGGLE THE ACADEMICS WITH THE ATHLETICS, AND THEY'VE DONE SUCH A GREAT JOB WITH THAT.

SOME OF THEM ARE AT ALMOST THE VERY TOP OF THEIR CLASSES.

SOME OF THEM HAVE MADE JUST OUTSTANDING SCORES ON THEIR TEST.

WE MAY ALREADY KNOW THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE ALL STATE, BUT YOU HAVE TO BE A SENIOR, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GPA OF AT LEAST 92 OR ABOVE AND THEN THEY TAKE SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON WHAT YOU MADE ON YOUR ACT AND SAT AND YOU CAN GET DEEMED HONORABLE MENTION, YOU CAN GET DEEMED SECOND TEAM, AND THEN YOU CAN GET DEEMED FIRST TEAM.

LET'S RECOGNIZE THESE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN STARTING WITH OUR STUDENT TRAINERS, WHO ALWAYS SEEM TO BE SOME OF THE SMARTEST OF THE BUNCH.

EACH YEAR THE TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BOARDS, THEY CREATE A THEME FOR THE APPRECIATION MONTH.

THIS YEAR'S THEME IS LOCALLY ELECTED, COMMUNITY CONNECTED.

WE'RE SO GRATEFUL TO HAVE BOARD MEMBERS WHO ARE NOT ONLY LEADERS HERE AT FRENSHIP, BUT ALSO OUT IN OUR COMMUNITY.

IN FACT, SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER CHELSEY SALAZAR COULD NOT BE HERE TONIGHT FOR THAT VERY REASON.

BECAUSE SHE'S BEING RECOGNIZED AS A LUBBOCK TOP 20 UNDER 40 LEADER.

CHELSEY, ALONG WITH ONLY 19 OTHERS ACROSS THE CITY OF LUBBOCK, ARE THE GUESTS OF HONOR TONIGHT AT THE TOP 20 UNDER 40 GALA CELEBRATION.

WE'RE VERY PROUD OF HER, OF THAT ACCOMPLISHMENT.

AS A SCHOOL BOARD, SOMETIMES YOU ARE THE PIECES THAT COME TOGETHER WITH VARIOUS BACKGROUNDS, VIEWPOINTS AND STRENGTHS TO MAKE THE DECISIONS THAT ARE IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF OUR STAKEHOLDERS AND SOMETIMES YOU ARE THE MORTAR THAT HOLDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER.

THE WORK YOU DO EVERY DAY TO MAKE FRENSHIP A PREMIER DISTRICT AND TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS, STAFF AND US AS PRINCIPALS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

IF YOU CAN TELL, THERE ARE THREE BUILDINGS ON THE FRONT OF THE CARD THAT REPRESENT OUR THREE NEW SCHOOLS, ALCOVE TRAILS, ELEMENTARY NUMBER 9 AND HIGH SCHOOL NUMBER 2.

ALL THE MOSAIC PIECES WITHIN THE BUILDING ARE THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP THE COMMUNITY SO THAT WAS CREATED BY SOME OF OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.

THEN YOU ALSO HAVE A PERSONALIZED UPLAND HEIGHTS CARD WITH A PORTRAIT THAT THEY DREW YOU.

[LAUGHTER] BUT DURING THE PROJECT, THE STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT WHAT A SCHOOL BOARD DOES AND WHAT YOU DO TO SUPPORT THE DISTRICT.

THERE'S ALSO A POEM SHOWING THEIR GRATITUDE AND HOW THANKFUL THEY ARE FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP.

WE HAD BENNETT STUDENTS MAKE A THANK YOU VIDEO, SO YOU'LL GET THAT LATER TONIGHT.

LEGACY STUDENTS ALSO HAND PAINTED SOME FRENSHIP PICTURES FOR YOU THAT YOU'LL GET.

BUT I DO WANT TO TURN YOUR ATTENTION TO THE POSTER BEHIND YOU.

THAT WAS MADE BY OUR WESTWIND STUDENTS.

THEY ACTUALLY STARTED IT ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO EARN A STICKER, AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURE ON THE TV.

THEY WERE ABLE TO EARN STICKERS FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR WHILE IN THE LIBRARY.

THEN THEY GOT TO PUT THE STICKER ON THE BANNER TO CREATE THE TIGER MURAL YOU SEE BEHIND YOU.

NOT ONLY DOES IT SIGNIFY THE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR EXEMPLIFIED BY OUR WESTWIND STUDENTS, BUT I WANT TO SHARE SOME OF THE WORDS FROM OUR WESTWIND PRINCIPAL MRS. POWELL, THAT SHE WROTE IN THE LETTER.

IN THE RUSH OF DAILY ACTIVITIES IT'S EASY TO LOSE SIGHT OF THE BIGGER PICTURE.

WHEN YOU STAND NEXT TO THE MOSAIC, IT CAN LOOK LIKE A COLLECTION OF MESSY WORK.

HOWEVER, WE OFTEN FIND THAT STEPPING BACK, AS YOU DO AS A SCHOOL BOARD, IT ALLOWS ONE TO APPRECIATE HOW THE INTRICATE DETAILS BECOME PART OF THE LARGER PICTURE UNFOLDING WITHIN OUR SCHOOLS AND OUR DISTRICT.

AGAIN, WE JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO SERVE OUR FRENSHIP STUDENTS AND STAFF.

TONIGHT'S PRESENTATION WILL BE ON THE CURRENT ONGOING CONSTRUCTION FROM THE 2020 BOND.

WE'LL START WITH THE NEW ELEMENTARY NUMBER 9.

THAT'S THE FACE BRICK ON THE EXTERIOR BUILDING IS NOW 100% COMPLETE AND THE MASONS ARE IN THE PROCESS OF FINISHING UP THE BLOCK-WORK ON THE ROOF, THE BRICK COLUMNS AT THE ENTRY, AND SOME MASONRY STONEWORK IS ALL THEY LACK.

CONCRETE CREWS HAVE POURED THE SIDEWALKS AROUND THE BUS-DRIVE AND ALL THE APPROACHES EXCEPT FOR THE ONE TO THE EAST.

ALL UNDERGROUND AND OVERHEAD ROUGH ENDS ARE COMPLETE AND 90% OF THE MAIN ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION PANELS HAVE BEEN SET.

THE DRYWALL IS COMPLETE IN THE CLASSROOM AREA TO THE SOUTHWEST AND THE PAINTERS ARE APPROXIMATELY 50% COMPLETE, TAKING EMBEDDING.

THE FINAL LAYERS OF ROOFING ARE INSTALLED OVER THE OFFICE, THE LIBRARY, THE PUBLIC PLATFORM AREA, WHILE FINAL PAPER-WALLS SHOULD BE FINISHED IN THE NEXT WEEK OR SO.

WITH THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING APPROXIMATELY 85% COMPLETE, THIS PROJECT IS ON SCHEDULE AND [INAUDIBLE].

THE FIRST PICTURE WE HAVE HERE IS OF EXTERIOR BRICK.

THAT WOULD MAKE UP THE WHOLE POPULATION OF THE SECOND HIGH SCHOOL, SO ABOUT A LITTLE OVER 1,000 KIDS, AND THE FRIENDSHIP HIGH SCHOOL HAS HALF OF THE NINTH GRADE, SO TO SPEAK, HALF OF THE 10TH GRADE, SO TO SPEAK.

YOU HAVE ALL THE FIFTH GRADERS AND ALL THE 12TH GRADERS, BECAUSE WE'RE ONLY OPENING WITH TWO GRADE LEVELS.

THEN IN THE 26, 27 SCHOOL YEAR, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE FRIENDSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DROPS IN POPULATION AGAIN.

THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER, THE NAME NOMINATION FORM WAS PUSHED OUT TO PARENTS THROUGH SKYWARD EMAILS, WE HAD REMIND MESSAGES.

TUESDAY FOLDER FLYERS WENT HOME TO ALL ELEMENTARY PARENTS.

IT WAS ALSO ON SOCIAL MEDIA, OUR WEBSITE, YOU MAY HAVE SEEN IT DURING COMMERCIALS, DURING THE LIVE STREAM, DURING SPORTING EVENTS IN NOVEMBER.

WE REALLY PUSHED IT OUT A LOT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE REACHING ALL OF OUR DIFFERENT STAKEHOLDERS.

AFTER THE SURVEY CLOSED, WE HAD NEARLY 1,200 NAME SUBMISSIONS THAT WERE MADE BY OUR STUDENT, STAFF, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

A QUICK BREAKDOWN OF THAT, MORE THAN 700 OF THOSE NAME NOMINATIONS CAME FROM OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN OUR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS,.

WE HAD MORE THAN 800 PARENTS SUBMIT NAMES OF THE ELEMENTARY, AND JUST UNDER 100 STAFF MEMBERS SUBMITTED NAMES AS WELL.

AND THEN THE REST WERE OTHER STUDENTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, ALUMNI AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

I HAPPENED TO BE VISITING WITH A PARENT WHO WAS A FRIENDSHIP GRADUATE.

I THINK MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER WERE FRIENDSHIP GRADUATES.

HE WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH TRADITION THERE IS AND HOW MUCH THEY LOVE THE DISTRICT AND BECAUSE OF THE TRADITION AND SO IF COURSE, I DON'T DOUBT HE DIDN'T SAY IT OUT LOUD, BUT I KNOW HE WAS THINKING, THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE WE ARE GROWING, AND WHILE OUR TRADITIONS WILL INCLUDE NEW TRADITIONS AND NEW SCHOOLS ITS BR, OF COURSE, NEVER GOING TO FORGET WHO WE ARE AND WHERE WE CAME FROM.

I'M THANKFUL FOR THAT BOOK IT'S 88 YEARS OLD AND IT DOES GIVE US A LOT OF MEMORIES OF WHERE WE CAME FROM AND THOSE ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS TO HELP US SEE WHERE WE'RE GOING SO WE NEVER FORGET WHERE WE CAME FROM OR WHO WE ARE LIKE YOU CAN TAKE THE GIRL OUT OF IOWA PARK, BUT YOU CAN'T TAKE THE IOWA PARK OUT OF THE GIRL [LAUGHTER] FOR WHATEVER THAT MEANS.

WITH THAT, I JUST WANTED TO SAY THOSE WORDS.

FOR SENIOR CLASS, A FRIENDSHIP FIRST EVER STARTED OUT WITH 20 STUDENTS WHO HAD NOT EVER GONE TO SCHOOL TOGETHER BEFORE, THEY CAME FROM FOUR SCHOOLS, BERYLWOOD, FOSTER CARLISLE, AND WOLFRETON.

THEY HAD TO MERGE TOGETHER AS A SENIOR CLASS THERE WERE 20 AND THERE'S A POEM IN THERE THAT I'M NOT GOING TO READ BECAUSE IT'S REALLY SAD [LAUGHTER] TIMES WERE HARD BACK THEN AND THESE BOARD MEMBERS WERE PIONEERS, THESE PARENTS AND THESE KIDS WERE BECAUSE THEY CAME FROM SOMETHING THAT THEY KNEW THAT WAS FAMILIAR AND DID SOMETHING JUST THAT HAD NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE.

SO THEY KEPT THE ELEMENTARIES IN THOSE FOUR LITTLE FARMING COMMUNITIES AND CAME TOGETHER AS A HIGH SCHOOL.

HIGH SCHOOL CLASS HAD 20 SENIORS, WHEN THEY STARTED AND THEY HAD 11 WHEN THEY GRADUATED.

IN THE POEM, IT TALKS ABOUT HOW THEY DIDN'T KNOW EACH OTHER THEY STARTED THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER, THAT THEY FORMED A COHESIVE GROUP AND THAT THEY SAID FOUR DROPPED OFF FROM MATRIMONY [LAUGHTER] AND ONE CAME BACK.

I THINK THEY DIDN'T SAY [LAUGHTER] THEY WERE ONLY ABLE TO RESCUE ONE AND THEN THEY SAID SIX QUIT.

AND THE WORDS THEY USED WERE BECAUSE OF DESPAIR AND DISCOURAGEMENT.

AND IN 1935, THINGS WEREN'T EASY IT WAS THE DUST BOWL THE HIGH SCHOOL THAT'S CURRENTLY FMS WAS BUILT WITH THE DERBY PA, MONEY FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE OUT OF WORK.

THE FARMERS AND ALL THE PEOPLE, YEAR OVER YEAR WERE JUST POOR MAN THIS HAS GONE FROM LIKE JUST EXCITING TO [LAUGHTER] SO THEY GRADUATED 11 SENIORS THAT FIRST YEAR WE ARE KNOCKING ON THE DOOR OF 12,000 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE DISTRICT.

IT HASN'T JUST BEEN THE BOARD I'M NOT LIKE PUTTING THIS ALL ON YOUR SHOULDERS THAT YOU'VE DONE THIS, YOU'VE DONE A LOT OF WORK, YOU'VE LISTENED, YOU'VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME BUT I THANK YOU FOR BEING PIONEERS AND HAVE THE COURAGE TO WELCOME THE PEOPLE THAT ARE COMING HERE AND THAT THEY WANT TO COME HERE AND WE WANT IT ALWAYS TO BE LIKE THAT.

OBVIOUSLY, WE WANTED THIS TO BE A COMMUNITY DECISION AND WE PUT IT OUT TO OUR FAMILIES AND AGAIN,

WE PUT OUT A NOMINATION SURVEY IN NOVEMBER FROM NOVEMBER 13 TO THE 30TH.

IN ADDITION TO THAT PUBLIC NOMINATION FORM, WE ALSO DESIGNATED A CLASS TIME FOR OUR CURRENT SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS SO THAT THEY COULD SUBMIT A NAME FOR THE SECOND HIGH SCHOOL.

THESE ARE THE TWO GRADE LEVELS THAT WILL BE THE FIRST STUDENTS AT THE SECOND HIGH SCHOOL AND AS A DISTRICT, WE THOUGHT IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO HAVE THAT DEDICATED CLASS TIME TO HELP NAME THE NEW SCHOOL DURING THIS MONUMENTAL TIME AND FRIENDSHIPS HISTORY.

THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER, AGAIN, WE PUSHED OUT THE INFORMATION TO PARENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS THROUGH SKYWARD EMAIL STAFF, EMAILS, MIND MESSAGES.

WE DID PRESS RELEASES, SEVERAL OF THE NEWS STATIONS PUT IT OUT THERE SO WE GOT A LOT OF FEEDBACK FROM OUR COMMUNITY WE HAD MORE THAN 1,700 SUBMISSIONS THAT WERE MADE BY OUR STAKEHOLDERS OF THOSE, MORE THAN 1,000 SUBMISSIONS WERE MADE BY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THOSE SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS WHO COULD BE THE FIRST IN THAT SECOND HIGH SCHOOL.

ABOUT 300 PARENTS SUBMITTED NAMES.

150 STAFF MEMBERS SUBMITTED NAMES AS WELL THOSE COULD ALSO BE PARENTS.

THEN WE ALSO HAD AROUND 130 PEOPLE WHO SUBMITTED NAMES THAT SAID THEY WERE FRIENDSHIP ALUMNI.

WE'RE HAPPY TO GET THAT FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS WHO GREW UP IN FRIENDSHIP AND THEY WENT THROUGH THE FRIENDSHIP SCHOOLS, IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE INCLUDED THEM ON THAT DECISION MAKING PROCESS AS WELL.

AFTER THE SURVEY CLOSED, WE DID COMPILE ALL THE SUBMISSIONS AND WE HAD A STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE HELP REVIEW THE NAMES AND THEN NARROW THOSE NOMINATIONS DOWN.

THE STATE REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 75,600 INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THEN THE CALENDAR HAVE 187 WORKING DAYS FOR TEACHERS.

SO YOU'RE TRYING TO BALANCE OUT TEACHER DAYS VERSUS STUDENT MINUTES WHEN YOU'RE CREATING THOSE CALENDARS.

THEN EACH YEAR WE ALWAYS WORK IN TWO BAD WEATHER DAYS AND THEY'VE BEEN THE SAME FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS.

APRIL 18TH IS GOOD FRIDAY AND MAY 23RD, THAT'S THE LAST FRIDAY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

IT'S A GROUP OF ABOUT 35 PEOPLE.

WE HAVE REPRESENTATIVES FROM ALL 15 CAMPUSES, SO EVERY ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL.

WE HAVE DISTRICT STAFF FROM DEPARTMENTS SUCH AS CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION, STUDENT SERVICES, BUSINESS OFFICE, HUMAN RESOURCES.

IT TAKES A LOT OF DIFFERENT COLLABORATION TO CREATE THESE DRAFTS WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT IT FROM THE HUMAN RESOURCES AND BUSINESS SIDE VERSUS THE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION SIDE.

THEN AGAIN, WE ALSO INCLUDE OUR PARENTS IN THIS CALENDAR COMMITTEE PROCESS, SO WE HAD SEVERAL PARENTS THAT HAD ELEMENTARY MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH STUDENTS TO HELP GIVE THEIR PERSPECTIVE DURING THAT MEETING.

LAST NIGHT WE FINALIZED TWO DRAFTS.

WE HAVE STAFF STARTING ON AUGUST 5TH, STUDENTS STARTING ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14TH.

THE WINTER BREAK IS GOING TO BE THE START DAY FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS ALONG WITH THE WINTER BREAK IS GOING TO BE THE SAME ON BOTH DRAFTS A AND B, AND IT ALSO ALIGNS WITH LUBBOCK ISD AND THEIR PROPOSED CALENDARS THAT THEY'VE PUT OUT.

SOME OF THE FEEDBACK WE'VE GOTTEN IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS IS THAT OUR PARENTS AND STAFF LIKE IT WHEN THE THREE LARGE DISTRICTS HAVE VERY SIMILAR DRAFTS, IT JUST MAKES IT EASIER FOR IF YOU HAVE STAFF MEMBERS THAT WORK AT ONE DISTRICT AND THEIR KIDS GO TO ANOTHER.
