WHO WERE RECENTLY SELECTED FOR THE TEXAS MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION ALL STATE CHOIR.FRENSHIP HAD FOUR STUDENTS FROM FRENSHIP HIGH SCHOOL, AND THREE STUDENTS FROM FRENSHIP MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL EARNED THIS HONOR, AND IT IS THE HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL HONOR FOR A HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIAN, AND ONLY THE TOP 3% OF MUSICIANS WHO INITIALLY AUDITIONED FOR THIS BECOME ALL-STATE MUSICIANS. NOW, TONIGHT, OUR MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR DIRECTOR WHO IS GOING TO BE HERE.
I COULD NOT BE HERE FOR FOR DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT WE DO HAVE OUR FRIENDSHIP.

ALYSSA JONES, THE ALL-STATE TREBLE CHOIR CLINICIAN, POSTED THIS MEME TO HER SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT AFTER SATURDAY'S CONCERT.
IT'S A MEME FROM ANOTHER SOURCE. BUT SHE SAID, YOUR NEXT MOVE MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR LAST MISTAKE. CRISTIAN DE LA CRUZ FROM THE MIXED CHOIR HE'S MIXED CHOIR COORDINATOR LEFT THIS NUGGET OF WISDOM AS WELL AS STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS.
THIS LAST WEEK, HE GAVE THEM THE WORD EPHEMERAL, MEANING THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS IN LIFE THAT ARE MEANT TO BE ENJOYED FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME WHILE. THESE ARE, THESE ARE TWO HUGE LIFE LESSONS THAT MIGHT SEEM COUNTER TO EACH OTHER, BUT GO HAND IN HAND.
THEY CAN'T DWELL. STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS COULD NOT DWELL ON WHAT JUST HAPPENED IN THE MUSIC. ALSO IN LIFE.
THEY HAVE TO LEARN TO KEEP GOING.
STAY IN THE GAME TO BE PREPARED FOR WHAT COMES NEXT.
ON THE OTHER HAND, THEY NEED TO LEARN TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE BEAUTIFUL AND POIGNANT MOMENTS WHEN THEY DO HAPPEN.
AM I CORRECT? BECAUSE THIS REALLY IS A WONDERFUL PEOPLE.

AND SO THIS, THIS PAST FALL, WE HAD THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY. IT JUST HAPPENED TO FALL ON THE DAY THAT WE WERE SCHEDULED TO HAVE ONE OF OUR MEETINGS. AND IT WAS AT THE TIME WHEN THOSE WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE FINANCIALLY WERE STRUGGLING WITH FOOD AND THEIR BENEFITS HAD BEEN WERE ON HOLD.AND SO MANY FAMILIES, MANY WHO WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT, THEY WEREN'T GETTING CHECKS.
AND SO THEY ALSO WEREN'T DIDN'T HAVE FOOD.
IT WAS JUST LAST MINUTE WITH THE SOUTH PLAINS FOOD BANK TO THEY HAD VEGETABLES, FRESH VEGETABLES THAT WERE GOING TO RUIN BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE VOLUNTEERS IN THE SPACE TO, TO HAND IT, HAND IT OUT.
AND SO THIS GROUP, THEY HAD NO TIME, NO ADVANCE WARNING.
AND THEY WERE, I THINK I COULD USE THE WORD DELIGHTED.
THEY WERE DELIGHTED. THEY WERE REALLY JUST DELIGHTED TO HELP.

WHAT WE DO IS DO A LOT OF COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS.

BUT WE MAKE WELL WE DON'T, THEY MAKE BLANKETS AND GIVE THEM TO UMC HAS A CLINIC THAT TREATS SPECIFICALLY PATIENTS WHO ARE IN UNDERGOING CANCER TREATMENT. AND SO THE SYMPTOMS AND THINGS THAT GO ALONG WITH THAT.
AND SO THEY MAKE THE BLANKETS.
AND THEN UMC PUTS A REALLY NICE NOTE ON THOSE BLANKETS SO THAT THEY KNOW WHERE THEY CAME FROM. AND THESE, THE KIDS STARTED DOING THIS MANY YEARS AGO.
MY MOM PASSED AWAY IN FEBRUARY OF 2017, AND HER LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS SHE SPENT IN HOSPICE IN WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS.
AND WHEN WE ARRIVED THERE, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT WE GOT WAS A BLANKET FROM. IT WASN'T AFFILIATED WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT THERE WAS A NEARBY CHURCH AND THE YOUTH GROUP MADE BLANKETS.
AND SO NOT ONLY DID THE BLANKET SERVE AS YOU KNOW, IT WAS USEFUL BECAUSE IT'S ALWAYS FREEZING IN PLACES LIKE THAT.
AND THEN ALSO IT WAS SUCH AN ENCOURAGEMENT.
AND SO I WOULD SAY THAT THAT IS WHAT DEFINES THIS GROUP OF KIDS.
IS THERE AN ENCOURAGEMENT IN ANYONE WHO SAYS THAT THE FUTURE IS DOWNHILL AND THERE'S NOT MUCH HOPE HAS NOT MET THE CHILDREN WHO GO TO FRENSHIP ISD AND THEY CERTAINLY HAVEN'T MET THESE KIDS. AND AT THE END OF THAT DAY, THAT EVENING, I GOT A COMPLAINT FROM A PARENT. AND IT WAS BECAUSE THEIR CHILD CAME HOME AND TOLD THEM WE DIDN'T DO THE PLEDGES AND WE DIDN'T HAVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE.
AND SO THE NEXT DAY, I CALLED GREG AND I WAS LIKE, GREG, WHAT'S, YOU KNOW, WHAT'S GOING ON? AND HE WAS LIKE, AND BY THE WAY, GREG HERNANDEZ SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY. AND SO HE IS NOT ONE TO FORGET.

DURING THIS PAST 89TH LEGISLATURE, I'VE BEEN.
WITH THE PASSING OF HOUSE BILL, TWO RECENT CHANGES WERE MADE TO PHASE OUT CERTIFICATION FLEXIBILITY FOR FOUNDATIONAL SUBJECTS BEGINNING IN THE 2627 SCHOOL YEAR.
YOU'LL HEAR FRENSHIP. WE TRY VERY HARD TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HIRE QUALIFIED CERTIFIED STAFF FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO AFTER THIS CAME OUT THE COMMISSIONER SAID, WELL, JUST LET'S PUMP THE BRAKES.
HOLD ON. WE'RE GOING TO ALLOW DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATES TO BE ABLE TO APPLY FOR A WAIVER. SO WITH THAT WAIVER OF COURSE, PART OF THAT IS A PLAN THAT HAS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR THE BOARD. AND THEN THE PLAN ALLOWS US TO THEN SUBMIT THAT WAIVER TO THE COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION.
AND SO YOU SHOULD HAVE THE PLAN IN FRONT OF YOU IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, IF YOU'RE HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM. IF NOT, I'LL GIVE YOU A RECOMMENDATION. OKAY.

BUT I'M GOING TO DO A QUICK SUMMARY OF WHAT WE DO FOR OUR CALENDAR COMMITTEE AND HOW WE COME UP WITH OUR DISTRICT CALENDAR EVERY YEAR.SO THERE'S A COUPLE OF REQUIREMENTS THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND.
IT INCLUDES A THE STATE REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF 75,600 INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES FOR STUDENTS.
BUT WHEN IT COMES TO STAFF, WE HAVE 187 WORKING DAYS.
SO SOMETIMES IT CAN BE A BIT OF A CHALLENGE.
AND TO PUT THE PUZZLE PIECES TOGETHER TO MAKE THAT WORK FOR A DISTRICT CALENDAR.
AND THEN NEW THIS YEAR, WE WERE REQUIRED TO BUILD IN AT LEAST TWO DAYS OF EXTRA MINUTES OR HAVE TWO BAD WEATHER DAYS DESIGNATED ON THE CALENDAR.
THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE ALWAYS DONE IN THE PAST, SO THAT WASN'T REALLY ANYTHING NEW FOR US.
WE ALWAYS BUILD IN EXTRA MINUTES.
FOR EXAMPLE, THOSE DAYS THAT WE MISSED IN JANUARY, WE HAD ENOUGH MINUTES BUILT INTO THE CALENDAR TO WHERE OUR STUDENTS DON'T HAVE TO MAKE THOSE UP THIS YEAR. SO THE TWO CALENDAR DRAFTS THAT WE HAD MET, THAT REQUIREMENT OF EXTRA MINUTES, A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE COMMITTEE, WE HAD APPROXIMATELY 40 PEOPLE ON THE COMMITTEE.
IT WAS THE BIGGEST ONE THAT WE'VE HAD SO FAR.
WE HAVE REPRESENTATION FROM EVERY CAMPUS, ALL 16 CAMPUSES.
WE ALSO HAVE DISTRICT STAFF AS WELL FROM THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS LIKE COMMUNICATIONS, CNI, STUDENT SERVICES TEAMS, BUSINESS OFFICE, HUMAN RESOURCES. IT TAKES A LOT OF THOSE DIFFERENT GROUPS COLLABORATING TOGETHER WHEN IT COMES TO STAFF, PROFESSIONAL OR STAFF, PD DAYS, PAYROLL, ALL THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO LOOK AT WHEN WE'RE CREATING THAT CALENDAR.
AND THEN WE ALSO HAD PARENTS FROM ACROSS THE DISTRICT THIS YEAR.
WE HAD 11 PARENTS ON THAT COMMITTEE FROM ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL TO HELP PROVIDE THEIR FEEDBACK.
THESE WERE THE TWO DRAFTS THAT THE COMMITTEE CAME UP WITH THAT WE PUT OUT FOR A SURVEY.
THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE THAT YOU SEE ON THESE.
SO ON DRAFT A, OUR STAFF CAME BACK ON AUGUST 10TH WITH A WEDNESDAY START FOR OUR STUDENTS ON DRAFT B. IT WAS A MONDAY START ON AUGUST 17TH FOR STUDENTS.
AND THEN THERE WAS ALSO A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN THE SPRING SEMESTERS WHERE THERE WERE ON DRAFT A, YOU HAD MORE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STUDENT HOLIDAYS VERSUS DRAFT B SINCE YOUR STAFF WERE COMING BACK EARLIER, YOU WERE ABLE TO BUILD IN A FEW MORE HOLIDAYS TO REACH THAT. 187. SO AGAIN THE THAT BOTH DRAFTS MET ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS THAT I

DISCUSSED EARLIER. THEY HAVE THE SAME THANKSGIVING BREAK, WINTER BREAK, SPRING BREAK, THE SAME BAD WEATHER DAY, AND THE SAME LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.AND AGAIN, THOSE MAJOR DIFFERENCES THAT I POINTED OUT, THE WEDNESDAY START ON THE 19TH AND THE MONDAY START ON THE 17TH.
THAT SEEMED TO BE THE BIGGEST THING THAT WE HEARD ON THE SURVEYS AS WELL.
SO AFTER THE COMMITTEE CAME UP WITH THOSE TWO DRAFTS, WE PUT IT OUT IN A PUBLIC SURVEY THAT CAME OUT ON JANUARY 16TH THIS YEAR.
WE ALSO EXTENDED THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT WE PUT THE CALENDARS OUT ON A SURVEY.
AND WE SURVEYED OUR EMPLOYEES, OUR PARENTS, OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
WE PUSHED IT OUT THROUGH SEVERAL DIFFERENT CHANNELS, INCLUDING OUR WEBSITE STAFF EMAILS, PARENT EMAILS, REMIND MESSAGES, SOCIAL MEDIA, PAW PRINTS, FLIERS, ALL THE THINGS. AND SO THEN DURING THAT SECOND MEETING, WE TOOK A LOOK AT THE DATA FROM THAT SURVEY.
AND SO HERE'S JUST A QUICK LOOK AT THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF WHO VOTED.
SO THIS YEAR WE HAD JUST OVER 2000 PEOPLE TAKE THE SURVEY.
THAT'S ACTUALLY MORE THAN WHAT WE'VE SEEN LAST YEAR.
WE KEEP SEEING MORE AND MORE EACH YEAR.
BEFORE THAT IT WAS ABOUT 1800.
SO WE'RE SLOWLY SEEING ABOUT 100 MORE PEOPLE TAKE THE SURVEY EACH YEAR.
AND AGAIN, PARENTS USUALLY MAKE UP THE MAJORITY OF THAT.
WE HAD ALMOST 1200 PARENTS TAKE THE SURVEY AND ANOTHER 550.
AND THEN WE ADDED THAT SUB CATEGORY TO, TO WHERE IF YOU WERE A PARENT AND A FRENSHIP STAFF. SO OF THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT TOOK THE SURVEY, 253 WERE ALSO PARENTS IN THE DISTRICT.
AND SO HERE IS A LOOK AT THE RESULTS.
DURING THE LAST MEETING WE WERE AT 50/50.
SO IT DID MOVE A LITTLE AFTER THAT.
AND I THINK THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY THAT WE GOT IT OUT WAS THE REMINDER MESSAGES TO THE PARENTS, BECAUSE EVERY TIME WE WOULD SEND ONE, THAT'S WHEN WE REALLY WOULD SEE A JUMP IN THE NUMBER THAT WE'RE TAKING THE SURVEY.
AND SO YOU CAN SEE IT'S VERY CLOSE 51% TO 49%.
AND THEN BECAUSE WE DID THOUGHT EXCHANGE, WE WERE ACTUALLY ABLE TO TAKE A DEEPER LOOK AT THE DATA. AND I KNOW THAT'S A LITTLE HARD TO SEE.
IT'S IN YOUR PACKET THAT YOU HAD.
BUT WHEN WE BROKE IT DOWN BY DEMOGRAPHIC, PARENTS TENDED TO FAVOR DRAFT A WHILE STAFF TENDED TO VOTE FOR DRAFT B.
AND SO YOU KIND OF YOU CAN AND THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS, YES, IT DOES SAY 60%, BUT THERE WERE ONLY 50 COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT TOOK THE VOTE. SO THAT'S WHY THOSE ARE A LITTLE BIT WIDER IN MARGIN.
SO THERE WAS A LOT OF DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS DATA IN THE CALENDAR COMMITTEE MEETING, MORE SO THAN WHAT WE'VE HAD IN PAST YEARS, BECAUSE USUALLY THERE'S A VERY CLEAR WINNER.
SO WE HAD A GREAT COMMITTEE WHERE OUR PARENTS, OUR STAFF MEMBERS WERE NOT AFRAID TO GIVE FEEDBACK.
WE HAD A LOT OF THOUGHTFUL DISCUSSION.
AND THEN WE ACTUALLY TOOK A VOTE AS A COMMITTEE ON WHICH SURVEY THAT THEY WANTED TO RECOMMEND TO YOU TONIGHT.
